Painfree arthritis, naturally
Are you experiencing arthritis pain in your hands, knees, hips, neck, spine or back?
Has your pain and discomfort got to a stage where you've been taking analgesics or anti inflammatory drugs, avoiding social situations where you may have to stand or walk for any length of time or are you steadfastly resisting but finding it really hard not to go down that path?
Whichever stage you are at, keep reading, I can help you. There is still hope......there ARE alternatives available.
At this time there is no known cure for arthritis, we both know that.
We have the choice of going down the western medicine path - drugs being the centrepiece of management usually - but there are many alternatives and most people try at least a few of these at some stage seeking relief from their arthritis pain and discomfort.
Natural or alternative therapies could include, acupuncture, herbs, homeopathy, massage, chiropractic, nutritional supplementation, arthritis diets - dietary exclusion of pain producing foods, mind exercises, wearing copper jewellery, magnetic therapy, cryotherapy and physical therapies including hydrotherapy.
What many people fail to recognise is that a management plan combining of a few of these treatment modalities is the answer. No one treatment in isolation covers all bases.
So, which ones I hear you asking?
Arthritis is a disease affecting the whole body, not just a knee or hip or back. It has the ability to take over your life, impair your physical activity and your independence. Worse still, it can be really depressing and can reduce your quality of life generally.
I am offering an anecdotally based self management program which combines western medicine therapies and alternative therapies ....... a balanced combination.
Who am I to be providing answers for you?
I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis as a young woman in 1969 and as a professional registered nurse for over 30 years since then I gleaned the most effective arthritis management practices in the community at large and in the facilities in which I worked.
In my work and private life I consulted with Rheumatologists, nutritional and environmental doctors and naturopaths in Australia and South Africa.
- I asked the questions, listened carefully to the answers
- I personally put their treatment and theories to the test
- I read many texts over the years, both anecdotal and scientific
- I attended conferences, sat and listened to visiting luminaries from within Australia and from overseas
- I personally worked with physical therapists and occupational therapists and arthritis patients for over 20 years
- I trained as an arthritis group facilitator and set up community self-help groups.
The result of all this is a sensible, practical, balanced, holistic, self-management program that can be personalised to suit your own situation. I understand that we are all different. Treatment/management is never a 'one size fits all' situation.
I know how you may be feeling......on many occasions as a young mother I was not only in pain but tearful and depressed as well!
Over the years I tried everything from steroids to paracetamol and soluble aspirin, hormone injections, immuno-suppressant drugs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, tetracycline, green lipped mussel capsules and herbs, having emu oil, veterinarian liniment and menthol rubs to sipping whiskey with chillies.
I tried fasting, diets such as the Pritikin diet, the Hunter Gatherer diet, and various exclusion diets such as no meat, no nightshade vegetables, no dairy foods and no fruit.
I tried various physical therapies, splinting, acupuncture, homeopathy, magnetic therapy and have had surgery to various joints. In fact I kept us poor for many years in my persuit of the answer.
The result was that I found no one magic answer, but by 1985 I had made lots of changes to my lifestyle that had improved my pain situation quite markedly.
With a few adaptions to your lifestyle and a real desire to be free of pain, you too can realise your hopes and desires for a better life.
Can you afford not to check out a more natural way to combat your pain and discomfort?
The present day approach and orthodox treatment of the symptoms of arthritis is still colored with fear, risks, complications and uncertainties, enough fear and uncertainties and complications to drive thousands of thinking people to seek alternatives. But while many people think and talk about alternatives, when it comes to applying the principles to their everyday lives, it's all a bit hard.
I have a proven strategy, a well-worn path that has really helped alleviate my pain and suffering so much so that I have led an active, productive and happy life for many, many years with a minimum of input from western medical sources. I am happy to share my lifestyle habits with you so you too can experience a better, more productive and happier life. Why try to reinvent the wheel?
Many people with arthritis are malnourished and or overweight, even those fronting up for surgery. If your doctor has not reviewed your lifestyle and dietary habits, it seems logical to assume that all is OK or at worst, unimportant.
None of us would put water into the petrol tank of our car because we know what the result would be. Yet we continually barrage our bodies with foods, drinks, lotions, and aerosols that are full of harmful chemicals, additives and preservatives. I believe we almost become ticking chemical time bombs, so its no wonder we get degenerative diseases like arthritis.
If you are just plain sick and tired of the merry-go-round of pain and discomfort as well as the 'no end in sight' scenario? Then you need to examine my program.
There is a way out. Let me show you the way. Your life, as you know it, can change!
Consider the following........
- How is your attitude, positive? Why does it matter anyway?
- How can I exercise when I'm sore all the time and have limited energy?
- I already eat better than most people I know, how could that be a problem?
- OK, so if food is part of the problem, what is on the list and what is not?
- Are you inferring that I may be causing my own health problems?
- Where does my lifestyle come into the equation?
- Should I be taking vitamins and minerals? What about antioxidants?
- What alternatives do I have for pain relief?
- You have your car serviced regularly what about yourself?
Knowing the answers to these things alone will make a big difference to your life.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
Chapter 1 No wonder we suffer ill health!
As I understand it, most people try to attain improved health from 'without-in'. That is by trying to change disease of the body by drugs or surgery.
Our health care systems are geared to treat in that manner. The onus is on the practitioner to get us well. All we have to do is be the patient! Surely the most effective way to treat disease is from 'within-out, to get as close to the sources of the aggravation or causes as possible. This way, the onus is for us to get ourselves well or to at least manage ourselves efficiently and effectively without the added risks.
As I see it, to assist the process our whole circumstances need to be reviewed. Our lives in the vast majority of cases need to change direction. Nothing changes unless something changes! How can we reasonably expect a different outcome if we continue doing things the same way? For us to start believing that things can be different for us, we need to start doing things differently, thinking differently.
Chapter 2 - Listen to your body!
Let the presence or absence of symptoms act as your guide.
A well-balanced exercise and joint protection program should contain exercises that maintain mobility, maintain strength and promote endurance but at the same time protect you from joint or soft tissue injury.
Have respect for pain, it can be a good indicator. Strike a balance between rest and work. Reduce effort involved in doing tasks such as gardening, reading, meal preparation, dressing.
Chapter 3 - We eat to live not live to eat!
Dietary guidelines and considerations. What to eat and what not to eat. How will I know if a particular food is OK or not?
Good nutrition is preventive medicine at its best.
A balanced or optimum diet is one that contains sufficient quantities of nutrients to maintain normal body functions, repair body tissue and supply sufficient energy. Nutrition in the general scheme of arthritis management is tremendously under emphasized.
Many people who have arthritis are overweight, even those fronting up for knee or hip surgery. If your doctor has not reviewed your dietary/eating habits, it seems logical to assume that all is OK, or at worst unimportant.
I am constantly amazed when I observe the contents of shopping trolleys in supermarkets or read in magazines, the ingredients of dishes cooked for families. For example packet soups, bottled artificially colored and flavored sauces and processed meats.
None of us would knowingly put water into the petrol tanks of our cars but we continually barrage our bodies with foods that are full of additives and preservatives, foods containing large amounts of salt, fats and sugar, foods that are so over processed, over refined and devitalized.
We eat to live, not live to eat!
Read what I have to say about chewing habits, the use of salt and condiments, artificial sweeteners, dairy foods, proteins and seafood in particular, the humble tomato, pepper and a whole lot more.
I provide food testing methodology, basic recipes and a daily meal guide.
Chapter 4 - Our lifestyle of dis-ease
Do we cause our own ill health?
Very few people acknowledge that various components of their lifestyle could in fact be contributing to their particular health problem/s. In my view this is one of the fundamental reasons why many people continue on a downward slide after a major health crisis.
Our health system by and large is still struggling to educate people in enough ways to help themselves and, as well, in my experience many folk do not adhere totally to prescribed treatment either
Folklore surrounding arthritis in particular, points to weather, acid foods and dampness as examples of causative factors. Having said that, once arthritis is established many factors can aggravate inflamed joints.
Why is it that many of us suffer ill health even though they may eat wholesome and unprocessed foods? Here we get into the nitty gritty of some of the reasons.
Chapter 5 - We need help!
In our situation, the most compelling reasons to consider nutritional supplementation, is that any diet that excludes foods or food groups for any length of time is unbalanced and secondly, our immune systems are compromised/weakened (as well as us having a disease process) and need any assistance available.
Also in a general sense, our bodies cope with environmental pollution constantly. As much as we might endeavour to eat and drink sensibly and healthily, use environmentally friendly products in and around our homes, and breathe clean air, there are no absolute guarantees in life.
What are your expectations of your life? Are you totally satisfied that you are doing everything within your power to help yourself feel better than you currently do?
I tell you what my nutritional supplementation regimen is and recommend how and why you would go about planning a regimen for yourself. I also give you hints and tips on how to clean up your lifestyle.
Chapter 6 - Listen to your body some more.
I had had arthritis for about 16 years before I really got a handle on the meaning of self management.
It was during those years that I dabbled with every sure fire cure that came my way.
It was also during those years that irreversible damage was done to some of my joints.
Even when I felt I had worked out the how and why of self-management, I continued to take prescribed medication for some time as a double insurance almost.
Listen to what your body is telling you. The presence or absence of symptoms will again be your guide. Employ alternative pain relief whenever and wherever required. I suggest a number of modalities.
Chapter 7 - Filling your tank and charging your batteries
Give yourself a head start to a new and more healthy lifestyle by paying attention to your health generally. Once a base line is established, continue the habit.
Do you get enough sunlight?
Do you know about orthotics? Maybe they could help you?
Do you have amalgam fillings in your teeth?
A lot of food for thought in this chapter.
Chapter 8 - Nine pearls of wisdom
The things that really make a difference.
The way we view things, if we realistically want to see change in our lives we must make the changes required, listen to our bodies. It gives us clues constantly. Tackle one challenge at a time
And much, much more.
